The Graupner "Systems" Catamaran, is one of the boats featured in our boat building section of this site. This is a very light weight racing style model weighing in at about 2.5lbs ready to run. Hull size is: 29" long, 10.5" wide, but when assembled will measure about 3" longer. The boats hull construction is from ABS Plastic . This hull is not sold as a complete running kit, just the hull only and requires 100% assembly. It included internal wood supports, stickers and glue. You need to provide the rest (drive line, radio gear, etc). Making this a great kit any more advanced hobbyist who wants to build a good fast R/C model boat (Nitro or Electric).
Initial testing of this boat was done at Lake Lopez in Southern/Central California. Temperature was about 100F (very hot) but that made it nice if you had to swim to retrieve any flipped boats. Yes, get a couple of boats on the water and you can not resist the urge to see who's boat is faster. Hence a flipped boat or two.
Performance was excellent, the boat was fast, hovering the entire hull about 1/2" (13mm) above the water at top speed, only the prop remained in the water. After transferring more weight to the front of the boat (i.e. the radio battery), it behaved nicely, settling slightly back into the water for corners. Cat's can really carve corners, this one was able to turn a 4' (1.5M) circle at full throttle. It also handled big swells and waves with ease.
The O.S. MAX .15 CV-M engine (non-pull start) we used in this boat had enough power to launch the boat completely out of the water from a stop! This is a new engine from O.S. producing .6HP on 20% Nitro. For this boat, we used a custom built steering strut and a Octura .130" dia. flex drive pushing a Octura Y535 submerged (3/8", 10mm) prop. A great set up for all around fun!
